Addendum: notes for a negative suicide

I come here to clarify some points raised regarding my essay “Notes for a Negative Suicide.” First, I wish to define more precisely what I mean by “negative suicide”: it is the act of taking one’s own life upon recognizing a negative value in existence itself — in becoming, in being, or however one may choose to name it. This “disvalue” arises, in summary, from the following aspects: the structure of the world, as it is, produces discomfort (not evil) in beings such as humans. These forms of discomfort are structural to human existence; one cannot be born without them. From this, humans, in order to endure their own being, attempt to ascribe value to themselves — whether through aesthetic, gastronomic, moral, or religious means (in short, through all kinds of “positive” activities with which we fill ourselves so as not to confront ourselves).The problem is that these values can often be destructive, manipulative, and harmful to other humans (as well as to morally considerable non-human animals). Our palate demands the death of thousands of animals born solely for slaughter. Our moral structures may require exclusion or persecution. Our happiness may come at the expense of many others. In sum, human beings are not “malevolent” or “inclined toward evil.” They are simply beings thrown into a condition of friction in which, in order to survive, they must commit countless ethical failures — that is, by manipulating and harming others. The negative suicide does not kill himself out of love, honor, financial loss, a political cause, or any religion — he kills himself to get out of here! He simply wants to escape the body he was forced to carry, the disturbing consciousness he has acquired, and to leave existence with one-way ticked. My essay was never intended to incite people to commit suicide; rather, I sought to demonstrate that it is always — from my perspective, arguments, psychological and biographical considerations, and the type of ethical framework employed — the best option to be taken in order to act ethically, to cease suffering, and to lose the capacity to contribute to the “meat grinder” that existence is for sentient beings. I am not speaking of homicide. I am speaking of suicide. Killing another is very different from killing oneself. The other has the right to decide what to do with their own being, and I cannot extinguish them merely because I consider their life to be disvaluable or unethical. 

With that in mind, I remain a great coward.

Venho aqui esclarecer alguns pontos feitos acerca de meu ensaio “Notas para um suicídio negativo”. Primeiramente, quero definir o que vem a ser “suicídio negativo”: é o ato de suicidar-se ao perceber um valor negativo na vida em si, no devir, em ser ou como você quiser bem chamar. Esse “desvalor” vem, resumidamente, dos seguintes aspectos: a estrutura do mundo, tal como ela é, causa mal-estar(não mal) em seres como os humanos. Os mal-estares são estruturais ao ser do ser humano, não se podendo nascer sem isso. Partindo disto, o humanos, para suportar seu ser, tentam dar-se valor, seja por meios estéticos, gastronômicos, morais, religiosos…(basicamente, todo tipo de atividade positiva que nos enchemos para não encararmos a nós mesmos). O problema é que estes valores podem muitas vezes serem destrutivos, manipuladores e maléficos a outros humanos( e animais não humanos eticamente consideráveis). O nosso paladar exige morte de milhares de animais nascidos apenas para o abate. Nossas estruturas morais podem demandar exclusões ou perseguições. Nossa felicidade pode custar a de muitos outros. Em suma, os humanos não são “malévolos” ou “inclinados ao mal”. São simplesmente seres lançando em uma situação de atrito na qual para sobreviver precisam cometer inúmeras falhas éticas(isto é, manipulando e prejudicando outros). O suicida negativo não se mata por amor, por honra, por ter perdido dinheiro, por uma causa política ou por alguma religião — ele se mata para sair daqui! Apenas quer fugir do corpo que lhe foi obrigado a carregar, a perturbadora consciência que adquiriu e sair da existência sem passagem de volta! Meu ensaio nunca teve o desejo de incitar pessoas a cometerem suicídio, apenas tentei demonstrar que ele é sempre(partindo de minha perspectiva, argumentos, aspectos psicológicos e biográficos, tipo de núcleo ético utilizado, etc) a melhor opção a ser feita para sermos éticos, deixarmos de sofrer e perder a capacidade contribuir com o moedor de carne que a existência é para seres sensíveis. Não falo de homicídio. Falo de suicídio. Matar o outro é muito diferente de matar-se. O outro tem o direito de decidir o que fazer com o seu ser, e não posso extingui-lo apenas por considerar sua vida desvaliosa ou antiética. 

Tendo isso em vista, continuo sendo um grande covarde.
